Quarter 1 Syllabus
Unit Overview: Students will learn the proper time designations and analyze the development and characteristics of civilizations, including the effects of the Agricultural Revolution. Students will analyze the geographic, political, economic and cultural structures of the civilization of ancient Mesopotamia. Students will analyze the geographic, political, economic and cultural structures of the civilization of ancient Egypt (continued in Quarter 2). Students will apply these skills to create and address questions that will guide inquiry and critical thinking. These practices should be regularly applied throughout the year. Students will progress through the inquiry cycle (SSP.01-SSP.04) by analyzing primary and secondary sources to construct and communicate their conceptual understanding of the content standards and to develop historical and geographic awareness (SSP.05-SSP.06).
Essential Questions: How do hunter-gatherer societies adapt to their environment in order to survive? How does geography influence the way Mesopotamians live? Why does conflict develop between Mesopotamian city-states? Why does religion develop in Sumer? Why did the Assyrian Empire rise and fall? What do the content strands stand for and give a short description of each: C, E, G, H, P
